Unlike synthetic wigs, human hair wigs are able to be dyed, straightened, and processed in the many ways the hair on our heads can be. That stated, it is important to take the same precautions as you would in dying your own hair to achieve the desired results with your unit.

Virgin human hair wigs – what we sell at NAFAwigs – provide the best base for hair dye because its porous strands are better able to absorb color. Below we have listed an 8-step process to dying human hair wigs.

  Step 1: Gather Supplies

In order to dye hair you will need the following items:

A human hair wig – a synthetic wig’s hair color cannot be altered

Hair dye – be mindful of how many boxes you may need, and which colors are possible with your base

Hair developer – this product enables the dye color to penetrate the hair shaft adequately

Rubber gloves – to protect your hands from staining

A plastic bowl & spoon – metal bowls can oxidize dye, which will cause it to change color

A comb – a small paint brush-like one and one with teeth for working dye into hair/combing it out after

A wig stand – or really any surface to leave the wig on for drying and coloring

T-pins – these will be used to secure the wig while you are working on it

Shampoo and Conditioner – for the post-dye wig wash

Towel – for drying hair and getting out excess water

  Step 2: Read dye instructions

Before you begin preparing anything, make sure you have read the instructions for the specific brand of dye you will be using. The box will give you specific instructions about how long the dye should stay and the amount you will need for your desired coloring.

  Step 3: Wash your wig

Your wig should be washed before the dying process to rid it of any oils, chemicals, or other products. You can use any clarifying shampoo of your choosing. Make sure you handle the wig gently and do not use conditioner before the dying process. Allow the wig to dry completely before starting the dye process.

  Step 4:  Secure wig

This step will allow you to stay organized while you are applying the dye to your unit and ensure the dye’s even distribution. The wig can be secured to a wig head using T-pins and comb out any tangles. Once the hair unit is tangle-free, separate it into sections.

Step 5: Mix the dye and apply it to the wig ,wear gloves

Mix the dye and developer together in a plastic bowl with a plastic spoon until you achieve your desired color. Make sure to be mindful of the instructions on the dye and developer packages. Depending on the color you are going for as well as the length of your wig, you may need more or less dye/developer.

When applying applying dye to the wig, use the paintbrush comb to stroke along the strands to saturate each section with dye. Apply an even amount of dye to each section to ensure the color is consistent throughout the wig.

Step 6: Allow the hair to set

Once the dye has been applied evenly to your wig, it will need time to settle into the hair unit. Follow the instructions laid out on the box of dye to determine how long the hair should be set. If the box does not indicate how long you should wait, give it 10 minutes and then check on the color. If the color is to your liking after 10 minutes, move on to the next step; otherwise, continue to wait and check back in 10 minute intervals until desired wig color is achieved.

Step 7: Wash hair and condition hair

Wash hair with lukewarm until the water runs clear of any color. Then, you can optionally use a color safe shampoo before applying the moisturizing after-color conditioner. Rinse out conditioner thoroughly and be careful around the roots to avoid hair coming out.

Step 8: Towel off wig and let it stand to dry

Use a towel to remove any excess water from the hair unit. Once the hair is no longer overly damp, use the T-pins to secure it back to the wig head for air drying. Alternatively, you can use a heat tool to speed up the drying process.
